Undertaking computer analysis requires specific skills and resources...

Background to Computer Forensics
We live and work in a digital world where computers play an integral role in our day to day activities.
As the use of digital equipment continues to grow, crimes involving computers such as fraud, child pornography, theft of confidential information such as credit card details and internet misuse are becoming increasingly widespread.
And as computers become a standard part of our lives, the information held within IT hardware and software has become critical from an evidential perspective. During the last five years there has been a rapid expansion in specialist investigations to counter the growth of computer misuse and in the development of specific tools and methods to collect and analyse 'legally safe' digital evidence.
Computer investigations cover both criminal and civil cases including human resources and employment disputes. Regardless of the scenario, strict rules and legislation govern the investigation of computer based evidence which must be carried out in a structured and auditable way. At a minimum, the guidelines of the Association of Chief police Officers (ACPO) must be adhered to.
The methods and tools used to source and analyse computer based evidence is also subject to change. As computer hardware and software technology develops so too must these tools, to provide analysis results that are accurate and fair.
Undertaking computer analysis requires specific skills and resources and the work must be carried out in an approved environment. Investigations are often time critical and their results central to the resolution of investigations or proceedings.
For most organisations, assembling the resources and facilities needed to undertake computer forensic activity at this level is unfeasible. For law enforcement agencies, the issue is often the sheer volume of computer investigation work which needs to be completed. The result can be a costly bottleneck in the judicial process.
